It is often said that true creativity is not confined to a canvas or a keyboard; it is a philosophy for how we approach every single moment of our lives.
This past week, I have been reflecting on this idea, prompted by an intriguing list titled “The Art of Creative Living.” It proposes that a fulfilling existence is something we actively shape with intention and presence, much like an artist working on a piece.
To live creatively, then, is to choose engagement over autopilot. It is a holistic blueprint for crafting a life well lived, grounded in both compassion and courage.
The principles: my reflections
I have grouped the principles of creative living into three core areas to help integrate them into my own thinking and practice.
The practice of connection
The first principles focus on how we interact with the world around us. Empathy is in the foundations: feeling our interconnectedness with other people and the world, broadening awareness so our actions become more informed.
Active listening follows. I recently realised that I sometimes ask a question, then listen mindlessly to the reply without being fully present. The challenge is to engage with what is being communicated—especially when confronting a different opinion—and to see listening as an act of respectful curiosity.
Maintaining curiosity about the world and the people within it prevents stagnation and limiting our potential. When I approach people and situations with genuine curiosity, I stop judging and start learning.
We will not all think in the same way, but we can listen and understand why people think differently. I also believe other people can spark inspiration for a project or help us innovate an idea we would not have reached alone.

Cultivating inner strength
Building the emotional resilience needed for authentic living is rarely a consistent practice. Any creative understands that we do not always work to a schedule or timetable; we work when inspiration and creative flow arrive.
Vulnerability is the ultimate balancing act. Being open and authentic requires immense courage, but it works only when that openness is protected by fierce boundaries. It is about being seen, not being exposed.
Self-awareness is vital for growth, and humour eases the tension of self-assessment and keeps things in perspective. Courage is not only for beginning big projects; it is for living authentically day to day. That courage must always be tempered with compassion, especially when I make mistakes.
To live creatively is to choose engagement over autopilot.
Nourishment and engagement
The final principles concern how I sustain myself and engage with community. I believe the people we choose to surround ourselves with affect both our mental health and how others perceive us. It is about choosing quality of character over quantity.
Nourishment of mind and body is essential fuel. It requires treating cognitive and physical health with gentleness and care, rejecting the aggressive, punishing narrative of self-care often seen online. We need movement that raises the heart rate, but we also need rest, reset and activities that let us reconnect with ourselves. People play a part in the kind of mental nourishment we receive, too.
I also set clear boundaries. They are a powerful declaration of self-respect: personal and professional limits protect the space needed to live creatively. Protecting an inner circle from unwarranted drama matters deeply to me. This can be harder with immediate family, especially within large, close-knit families where expectations and complicated dynamics require sensitivity and emotional intelligence.
Rest is a radical principle. I need to remember that genuine rest is not a luxury but a necessity for resetting, detoxing and rewiring. Sometimes I need time in front of the television like a zombie; at other times a mindful space with no distractions becomes a refuge. It may be a hot bath with candles and sound frequencies, or time in the steam room or sauna before a full-body exfoliating ritual. Ultimately, it means spending time in my own company without outside interference.
An open mind—and a collaborative spirit
An open mind and heart is a commitment to approach life without prejudgement, initially extending generosity toward ourselves and others. Not everyone who crosses our path will carry emotional intelligence or connect meaningfully with us. Being able to adjust slightly so another person feels at ease is an ability in itself.
I have also learnt that not everyone translates loyalty and trust in the same way, and that is okay. As a hardcore Aquarian, I am loyal to the core and will fight for the people I love—but if that loyalty is not reciprocated, I can erase someone from my orbit faster than a cremation and never look back.
Finally, fostering a collaborative spirit reminds me that creative living is not always a solitary pursuit. We grow together and we rise together. I love my own company, but I also love inspiring others.
